Blue Tracks : Long, Medium and Short

The Long Blue Track is a demanding day of 18kms. It will take from 6-7 hours. The Medium Blue Track is approximately 5 ˝ to 6 ˝ hours while the Short Blue Track is about 3 hours.

Leaving Awapai Quarters you walk over open farmland and descend to the Maungarakau Stream.  At the bottom of the gorge you have a very popular option of an additional round trip out to the Ngaruroro River to swim or fish.  This will take about an hour.

Continuing on the Blue tracks you ascend from the Maungarakau.  At the top of the gorge the 3 tracks separate.  The Long Blue Track winds along the river escarpment from which there are many breathtaking views into the deep river gorge, over the spectacular white cliffs. A testing hill climb up through a stand of kanuka trees takes walkers up to one of the highest peaks on the farm.

The Medium Blue Track is a more gentle climb to the same peak.  From the top of Waitata there are stunning 360 degree views into the Ruahine and Kaweka Ranges and the Ngaruroro river below stretching out towards Hawke BayCape Kidnappers can also be seen in the distance.

The return to the Awapai Quarters is down through kanuka clad ravines, over rolling farmland, past groves of deciduous trees and duck ponds.

You are bound to reach the Quarters well satisfied with your day of tramping.
