1 Red Track
A third walking track of approximately 12km or 4 to 5 hours heads east from the Quarters up to some landmark ancient pines on the eastern boundary of Awapai.
As you follow the ridge south skirting the Awapai basin you enjoy great views both out over Awapai and down into the serpentine Otamauri gorge. To the south east the Ngaruroro River snakes its way past stunning white cliffs and out to the vineyards in the distance.
You pass spectacular limestone outcrops then climb again to the base of the Fort (so called because the massive limestone rocks on summit which appear like battlements from a distance).
You then descend through the kanuka to the woodlots and duck ponds then back to the Quarters for a well deserved spa.
